We analysed 100 of the most popular movie remakes of the past forty years. A number of these movies have been remade more than once, in which case we looked at the two most popular versions.
To gather the critic score, we looked at the ‘Average Rating’ from Rotten Tomatoes which we converted into a percentage (as opposed to a rating out of 10) to allow for a straight comparison with the audience score.
To obtain the audience scores, we simply took the ‘Audience Score’ from Rotten Tomatoes.
We calculated an average of these two scores to reach our ‘Overall’ rating of the 100 movie remakes.
To analyse box office revenues, we researched the domestic lifetime gross of a film, adjusted for inflation, including any re-releases. Where possible, we took this from Box Office Mojo, which provides an inflation adjusted total, however in instances where this data wasn’t available we used other sources and calculated the inflation using a US Inflation Calculator.
When noting the studios, we looked at the ‘Film Distributor’, as opposed to the 'Production Studio’.
