How to create a stone-paved patio

Paving stones are more durable and easier to maintain that grass lawns or wooden decking. Stone-paved patios therefore represent an ideal solution to transform your garden into an eye-catching landscape without the heavy duty after care.

This guide gives you a quick over view of how to lay a stone patio and the tools you need to successfully fulfil your mission. Let’s start with the tools:

    • Stone pavers
    • Builder’s sand
    • Crushed stones
    • Dry cement
    • Plate compactor
    • Spirit level
    • Sledge hammer
    • Floor chisel
    • Shovel
    • Rake
    • Edging
    • 3-foot stakes
    • 10-inch metal spikes
    • Landscape adhesive
    • PVC conduit (optional)

Step 1: Sketch the shape of the patio

Your first job is to make a plan of how you want your patio to look and then measure out the space in your garden. This will give you a good idea of the amount of how much sand and stone pavers you need to buy.

      Step 2: Prep the patio

Mark the area of your patio by driving 3-foot stakes around the borders. Then get ready to start digging. You need to clear the area you want to build on and dig a space about six inches to 12-inches below the finish grade. The depth of your patio will depend on the thickness of your pavers. You should calculate six inches, plus the depth of your paving slabs. Then tamp the surface with a plate compactor.

      Step 3: Lay the foundations

This is where your patio area starts to take shape. Fill the space with at least 3-inches of crushed stone and stone dust. Dampen each layer with water to pack the base tightly using the plate compactor. Use a spirit level to make sure your base is flat.

      Step 4: Lay irrigation lines

Irrigation lines are optional, but if you live in a country that receives a lot of rain, add a layer of 3-inch diameter PVC conduit over the subgrade.

      Step 5: Mix the cement

The best cement mix for stone patios is one-part dry cement and 12 parts stone dust. Add water slowly to get a consistent and adhesive mix. To lay the cement mix, start in one corner and lay enough cement to accommodate a full paving slab. Level the mix with a rake. Once levelled out the cement mix should be about one and half inch thick.

Step 6: Lay the paving stones

You want to lay your paving stones gradually in the pattern that you have pre-designed. Don’t lay too much cement so that you can’t comfortably get in to lay the slabs without disturbing cement you have already laid. Continue this process until the area you want to pave is complete. Allow about ½ inch gap between

      Step 7: Trouble Shooting

Most patios will have sections that will not accommodate an entire paving slab. You will therefore have to cut a partial paver using a floor chisel and sledgehammer. Use the chisel to score a line across the stone. Score the block on both sides. If you’re contemplating a new patio or any other home improvement projects, you can get a discount on paving slabs and other building materials by taking advantage of our discount deals.
