Superhero Movies: Ranked is brought to you by MyVoucherCodes and is intended to showcase the research when we looked at 75 superhero films taken from Wikipedia’s list of films based upon Marvel Comics and list of films based on DC Comics, discounting any which were not about superheroes (such as Howard the Duck and V for Vendetta).
In terms of animated movies, we only looked at those which have had a full theatrical release, such as Big Hero 6 and The Lego Batman Movie.
For the audience score, we simply took the ‘Audience Score’ from Rotten Tomatoes and for critic score, we took the ‘Average Rating’ from Rotten Tomatoes which we multiplied by 100 to allow for comparison with the audience score. We then took an average of these two scores to reach our ‘Overall’ rating.
For box office, we looked at the domestic lifetime gross of a film, adjusted for inflation, including any re-releases. Where possible, we took this from Box Office Mojo, which provides an inflation-adjusted total, although if this wasn’t available we used other sources and calculated the inflation using a US Inflation Calculator.
When looking at profitability we took the films’ worldwide box office revenue compared to the production budget, without adjusting for inflation.
To settle the Marvel vs DC Debate we took the average Audience, Critic, Box Office an Profit/Loss across all the 75 superhero movies we included.
