More Information about Food & Drink

We need food and drink to stay alive. That’s true. But it doesn’t need to be as mundane as it sounds. In fact, the process of selecting, preparing and enjoying food can be an exciting, educational and pleasurable experience which starts right here, right now, and ends up on your plate. Broadening your palate can be just as important as education or travel, and is just as fun.

It is widely believed humans began cooking food over fires more than 250,000 years ago. Since then our habits have changed a little from simply roasting meat over flames to make it easier to eat. Besides from necessity, food and drink have special qualities that can bring us together; they can be used to add a dash of romance and excitement to any standard evening, or as an excuse to catch up with friends or family. And aside from that, there’s a unique pleasure to be gained from preparing food for our loved ones.

FAQs

How can I be sure the products I buy are certified organic?

Organic foods are those which have been produced using environmentally and humane farming techniques. In order to be classed as organic, the products and manufacturing process are subject to stringent regulation. The best way to tell if the product is organic is by looking out for the Soil Association symbol.

What is the difference between best before date, sell by date and use by date?

One of the biggest forms of waste occurs when we throw away food which is past the best before date. What most of us don’t realise is we actually end up wasting money by throwing out food which is still perfectly safe to eat. The ‘best before date’ refers to the fact that, after the date has passed, the food will still be edible, though it may not be at its best – this is often the case with tinned goods. A ‘sell by date’ is simply for the reference of retail staff – if you’ve passed this date and the food looks and smells fine, it will probably be OK to eat. You’ll see this on packets of salad. But a ‘use by date’, such as those seen on meat and milk, means the product will be unsafe after the prescribed date.
