I’m Jordan and I’ve been working at MyVoucherCodes since the summer of 2021. Outside of money-saving, I’m a keen musician and guitar player and can regularly be found in a dingy venue somewhere in Bristol or perched in front of my laptop recording. When I’m not doing this you’ll find me exploring the city, watching cult B movies, reading a Stephen King or Murakami novel, or guiding the mighty Bath City to Champions League glory on Football Manager. All the cliches, I know.
What do you love about food & drink?
In my nearly 30 years I’ve developed a taste for searching out the spiciest restaurants and takeaways and the hippest bars and pubs. If I had a personal mantra it would be ‘live fast, save hard.’ Not really, but when I’m not ranking Bristol's vegan burgers and Irn Bru cocktails I’m just as passionate about sharing the knowledge I’ve picked up during my time at MyVoucherCodes. I won’t be sharing my colour-coded spreadsheet of scores though, that’s all mine. Because what’s better than experiencing that new favourite flavour for the first time? Experiencing it with mouth-watering savings, that’s what.
What makes you an expert on saving money?
Before joining MyVoucherCodes, I worked in the food wholesale business supplying both retailers and caterers for 2 years. This gave me a great insight into how the industries work and you could say that I’ve seen how the sausage is made.
Because of this, I’m always looking for ways to save on food and, let's face it, it’s getting more important than ever. So whether it’s multibuys or offers at the supermarket or deals and promotions on my favourite takeaways.
Do you have some tips for saving money?
My top tips for saving on your food shop are never shopping on an empty stomach, always have a strict plan for your weekly meals and never pass up saving on short-dated items. Takeaways and restaurants are desperate for those mid-week customers, so moving that pizza and movie night or that cute evening out from the weekend to the week could end up saving you bundles.
What are some of your favourite retailers?
If we’re strictly talking food then my absolute go-to is Aldi. I wouldn’t have made it through uni without it and I long for the day when I’m within a practical distance of one again. It’s fantastic for that weekly shop on a budget and as a vegan (had to drop it in again) their vegan selection is truly impressive. Not only do they help you save but as a company, they strive to do things in a greener, healthier and fairer way which we should all support.
Outside of food and drink, music and film, fashion is definitely my biggest love. I can’t skate but I like to dress to try and give the impression that I could if I wanted to. That’s why a large part of my wardrobe comes from Route One. They’ve got a great selection of brands but the real star is their brand of clothing. Giving you all the latest streetwear styles at a reasonable price, often with a multibuy offer thrown in on top too. They’re also big on making their business and clothing better for the environment, which is always a plus.
If you’re a beer fan, one of the greatest joys of travelling is trying the local beer. Over the last few years, this has obviously been more difficult than ever and now it’s becoming more expensive than ever. That’s why places like Beer Hawk and Beerwulf are a lifesaver, you can explore a whole world of crisp lagers or hoppy ales from the comfort of your own home.
