The phrase ‘do it yourself’ or DIY was first coined in 1912 and ended up in popular usage by the 1950’s. But, of course, the desire to improve one’s personal environment is an impulse as old as mankind itself – remember the cave paintings you learned about in school?
Often, we engage in DIY or home improvement simply to save money. But for many people it’s a hobby - craftsmanship and taking pride in a job well done providing quite a buzz. And for some, decorating and furnishing is a creative passion, whilst others see it as a necessity. Whatever your thoughts on the matter, one thing we can all agree on is this simple fact; our homes affect our lives - we need a positive space to unwind and relax with our friends and family. And, as most of us spend the lion’s share of our free time at home, or in the garden, it’s important to create, adapt and manage our habitat so we feel comfortable and happy in our surroundings.
