I’m hosting Easter this year, and I love nothing more than creating the perfect spread. When it comes to hosting special occasions, it’s tempting to buy an abundance of new bits and pieces, but the cost quickly adds up.

The truth is that it’s not about buying more – it’s about styling what you already own and making sure that you know how to save when it comes to Easter celebrations. And with spring marking the season of new beginnings, it’s time to learn how to design a wholesome spread for Easter without overspending.

Mix and match tableware

Instead of buying matching crockery sets, which can be expensive, mix and match what you already have for that whimsical feel. Combine various plates and layer bowls on top for table settings. Use mugs or pouring jugs as little vases.

Bring the outdoors in

Nothing says spring like freshly cut flowers from the garden. Display them as the proud centrepiece on your table. Display sprigs of cut herbs and branches to give your space that relaxed but styled look.

Ditch the tablecloth

When it comes to tablecloths, use something you already own instead of buying a new one. Whether that’s tea towels for a patchwork vibe, a piece of fabric, or even a scarf, it’ll add a pop of colour to your spread. Layering is key for that elevated, organic style.

Homemade place cards

Use some old cards - extra points if it’s mix and match or pieces of scrap paper - and make some handwritten name cards. It’ll add a lovely, personal touch without spending a penny. If you have some scalloped scissors, use them to give them a cute border.

Use what you already have

If, like me, you’ve got a lot of bric-a-brac lying around your home, use it to give your table display a bit of oomph. I’m talking candles, vases, bowls, baskets, antique frames and cakestands. Group items together in odd numbers for that wholesome, natural look.

Style your food

Use fresh fruit that you plan on serving to add pops of colour and freshness. Carefully present baked goods like a loaf of bread or cakes and pastries for that homemade element. Pinterest is ideal for finding inspiration when presenting food.

Add height with books

Table settings always look best when objects and decor are placed with varying heights. Use books - be it cookbooks, coffee table books, or just regular books - to add dimension to your space. Stack under serving dishes for a dramatic effect.

Less is more

Spring is all about new beginnings and fresh starts, and more often than not, less is more. Avoid overspending on non-essential items and create a clean, elevated look with a minimalist spread. Allow for some space on the table, and opt for simple, understated decor items instead.

When I’m not writing about saving money on homely purchases, I’m either sitting with my head in a new book, painting a piece of art for my walls, or binge-watching an interior design programme on Netflix. I love to get inspiration and transform my space, usually with the help of a few Pinterest boards and a couple of tins of paint.
