As a former sports journalist and content creator, I swapped the press box for a permanent desk several years ago. Since giving match reports the red card, I have enjoyed developing my writing and research skills in a few other areas, and now I spend my time doing something I really enjoy - sharing the best ways to save on travel with our wonderful readers.

I love nothing more than exploring different parts of the world and learning about new cultures (and taking in the occasional sporting fixture, if at all possible). I’m just as happy on a quick city break in Lisbon as I am navigating my way across the width of America, and firmly believe everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy travelling regardless of their budget.

What do I love about travel?

My love for travelling properly took flight after I left university. A few friends and I flew to New York with a single goal in mind - to reach LA, on the other side of the country, by any means necessary and on a small budget. Several months and a few questionable hostels later, we’d made it. We’d travelled by coach, car and train and managed (somehow) to avoid breaking the bank in the process.

I’d learnt a fair bit as a result - chiefly to always double-check accommodation reviews and that driving through the desert at night time is a BIG no. The other thing I’ve realised is that regardless of budget, there are always useful hints and tips to follow when looking to save a little bit of cash. You’ve just got to know where to look!

Although the need to travel can be for a variety of reasons, I like to look at trips and excursions as individual experiences that can never truly be replicated. The freedom to explore can forge memories that last a lifetime, and that feeling is even sweeter if you can save a pretty penny whilst doing it.

What makes me an expert in this category?

Since my maiden ‘solo’ voyage, I’ve developed somewhat of a habit of looking for the best, cost-friendly ways of making trips happen. I’ve since blended these practices with my commercial experience, and am now here to help you identify the best money-saving tips available on both stay and vacations.

Just before the pandemic, I’d driven through Europe - visiting six countries in nine days and spending surprisingly little considering the cities I’d stayed in. Places like Switzerland and Italy typically aren't cheap, but there are always ways to save.

As a top tip, I’d always advise comparing the prices of accommodation both in town and out of town. You’ll usually find much better rates away from the centre, and (especially in Europe) an excellent range of public transport options so that you’re never too far from the action. What’s more, European public transport prices are usually a lot cheaper than in the UK, meaning your wallet won’t be too hard hit.

What are my favourite retailers?

Expedia - Expedia is a great all-rounder. They offer dreamy deals on domestic and international flights, package holidays and even car hire. What’s more, their website also has a handy ‘things to do’ section, which is designed to provide inspiration for activities whilst you’re away.

Booking.com - Booking.com is one of the biggest online holiday agents in the world, so they’re clearly doing something right., Whether you’re after an all-inclusive 5* resort in Thailand or a rustic cottage in the Cotswolds, you should be able to find what you’re after. They cover pretty much everything!

Trainline - All aboard for the best train-ticketing app on the market. Trainline offers the best prices on train travel not only in the UK but also throughout Europe. They’ve streamlined their offering with contactless ticketing and digital railcards, and they also offer coach-travel alternatives (which normally work out a little cheaper).
