It took me a moment to get into the world of fashion but once I did, there was no getting out. It all started with baggy band t-shirts that were promptly cut down to turn them into a cute off-the-shoulder number, or tied at the back to create a one-of-a-kind stylish crop top. But I didn’t want to spend the big bucks (or rather, my parents didn’t) on something I may accidentally trash and so, my passion for bargain hunting began.
Since then, I’ve become a connoisseur in the matter, and I pride myself on being able to create any look for a minimal cost. For some, clothes are just that, clothes. But for others? For others, their fashion choices are how they tell their story and how they express themselves. You might be an 80’s inspired queen, the reigning pop princess or a stylish hipster king. Or, you might just want some jeans on the cheap. Either way, whatever your style is, if you’re looking to keep your wardrobe 10 out of 10 without breaking the bank, then I’m your woman!
What makes you an expert on saving money in your category?I spent some time working with H&M as a sales assistant. This meant I could learn about different styles and the kinds of people that may be intrigued by something new or different. On occasion, I was also able to help customers create a sort of lookbook for specific events, functions, or simply to find the best look for the day. To do this to the best of my ability, it was always important to find out their budget, and I became a pro at finding the budget-friendly amazing looks they were eager to try!
Just like a lot of us, I have a dream basket with so many brands ready for that glorious payday. The best time to shop for your favourite looks is usually during the countless sales many brands have throughout the year (spring, summer, Black Friday, and Christmas), but if you’re not up for waiting, I frequently save money by scouring the sales sections, grabbing and the 2-for-1 deals, and scouting out MyVoucherCodes for the newest discount codes available.
Do you have a top tip for saving on fashion? My top tip for saving on your fashion choices is to purchase your autumn-winter fashion statements during summer. The sales sections are filled with every stylish winter must-have and they’ve usually got some great discounts attached. You can do the same with your summer wardrobe too - I mean, who doesn’t want to purchase a bikini when it’s raining and cold? You can fill your wardrobe with some iconic pieces, look the part, and still keep your bank happy all in one.
What was the best saving you made? The best saving was on a pair of VANS Sk8-Hi Mte shoes because they were around 20% off and had an incredibly durable design so I was able to wear them almost every day for 2 years before they showed any signs of wear and tear.
What was the last thing you purchased? The last thing I purchased was a few pairs of skinny jeans (rifling through some of the sales sections got me some great deals with one pair only being £5!) and a coat from Matalan because this summer has been anything but predictable! I also went into Pets At Home to get some toys for my very spoiled puppy.
What are your favourite retailers?Pull and Bear - I fell in love with Pull and Bear the moment I got my hands on the beautiful tie-dye oversized jumper that quickly became the most loved thing in my wardrobe. I’m constantly checking back to see their new releases because they nearly always have something amazing in their repertoire. Plus, the more often I check, the less likely I am to miss out on the sales they frequently have going on.
Cider - Cider has literally everything. One of my favourite things about Cider is the fact that you can filter what you’re looking for by mood! I recently went for ‘Feeling Retro’, and let me tell you, I did not regret my decision. After buying a boatload from their retro collection, I now jump to Cider whenever I’m looking for the newest addition to my wardrobe. Not only is Cider filled with so many chic options it’s maddening, but their high-fashion looks are also super affordable!
Nike - It’s fairly simple why Nike is one of my favourite brands and it is for one reason alone. Quite honestly, I am a bit of a sneakerhead at heart and so many of their shoes are on another level compared to most. Nike is currently on a journey to reach zero carbon and zero waste by doing things like starting up a recycling and donation scheme, refurbishing eligible returns and open box footwear instead of destroying them which in turn allows customers to purchase slightly used footwear at a lower cost. They’re even looking into making their logistics more environmentally friendly.
Vans - I love VANS because of their iconic shoes, personally I love their hi-tops most of all (especially since they save my ankle from the crank arm of a BMX). But I also love the clothes they release and the freeing lifestyle and inclusive message they promote in everything they do. They have recently released the new Eco Positivity range which has been created with 100% sustainability in mind, with organic canvas and recycled materials being at the forefront of their creation. They recognise their community is rooted in youth culture and so they are making an active effort to improve the environment for future generations.
