What we love about supermarket Christmas saving schemes

If you are a regular shopper at one or more of the supermarkets mentioned, this is a good way to earn extra spending before Christmas.

For example:

"I’m a regular shopper at both Sainsbury’s and Iceland. If I use the supermarket saving schemes at both supermarkets, I could grab up to £75 free cash to spend on Christmas goodies"

What we dislike about supermarket Christmas saving schemes

  • When you save this way you are tied to that supermarket.
  • Some schemes have deadlines on when you can spend your savings or bonus.
  • Unlike saving at a bank or building society, your money isn’t protected.
  • You might not get any change if you don’t use all the balance of savings vouchers.
  • If you have an emergency, you can’t withdraw your money early.
  • These saving schemes are not protected by the Financial Service Compensation Scheme.
  • If the company goes bust or you lose your physical savings stamps - you have lost your money.

Hints and tips

  • Using a savings account may suit you better. Especially as your money will be protected and you can still earn interest.
  • If you do decide to save, add your money at the last minute so you can limit the time it remains unprotected whilst still receiving your bonus. A good idea would be to save your money in a high-interest account and move your money onto a supermarket savings scheme on the final day, just before the cut-off.
  • Double your bonus. If you have 2 people in your household, both save on your chosen savings scheme and cash in on the bonus.
