11 of the best free ways to spend Mother’s Day together
Quality time doesn't have to cost a fortune.
When it comes to Mother’s Day, we’ve covered everything you need to know about finding the best gifts. Now it’s time to talk about quality time – and you’re in luck because I’ve compiled a list of 11 completely free ways to spend time together.
Ensure that your mum feels appreciated and prioritise making more memories together. Whether you’re helping mum properly relax or planning her favourite activities, I’ve shared my top tips on how to make your mum feel special this Mother’s Day.
1. Long walk
Spring is the perfect time to get out and enjoy the fresh air. Find a new walking spot to try out together and enjoy some uninterrupted time together. My mum loves getting her steps in, and I find the AllTrails app comes in handy to find new routes.
2. Slow morning
I mentioned the importance of a slow morning in my article on how to plan the ultimate day off for your mum. It might not sound like much, but it’ll definitely be appreciated. Enjoy a relaxed morning having breakfast in bed together. The key with this is to just chill.
3. Make a memory jar together
Last year for Mother’s Day, I made my mum a memory jar using an old candle and some card. I was trying to think of the best heartfelt present ideas, and she loved it. Do it together as a wholesome activity to reminisce. After making it, your mum can use it as a pick-me-up to put a smile on her face.
4. Do some gardening
By Mother’s Day, spring has well and truly sprung, which means it’s the perfect time to get back in the garden. If your mum loves gardening as a hobby, then dedicate some time to helping her. There’s nothing better than a trip to the garden centre.
5. Go for a picnic
Make the most of the blue skies and sunnier days in March and go for a picnic. Pack the best picnic food – M&S has a fantastic selection of Spring picky bits – and enjoy. It’s a great way to get out and about in nature and engage in some quality time together.
6. Favourite film
Top up on your favourite cinema snacks and cosy up to watch mum’s favourite film. Make it feel extra special by transforming your lounge into an at-home cinema by making your own cinema tickets and serving popcorn in a classic striped bucket.
7. Organise her space
If your mum’s love language is acts of service, then maybe this one is for you. Organise her work-from-home setup with her, or declutter her space so she can relax. A tidy space is a tidy mind, and it often falls to the bottom of a to-do list. Put some music on and do it together.
8. Write her a heartfelt letter
If your mum loves to romanticise her life, then this one will go down a treat. Find some letter-writing paper and a few pens, and write heartfelt letters to one another over a cuppa. Be as creative as you like.
9. Bake something together
This time of year is perfect for baking some delicious goodies. With Easter right around the corner, the supermarkets are jam-packed full of everything from mini eggs to Lindor bunnies. Alternatively, try a new Spring recipe like a Pavlova wreath - you’ll certainly have fun making it together.
10. Start a new tradition
Write poetry. Host an afternoon tea. Do a pilates class at home. Spring is the season of new beginnings after all, so why not start a new tradition? You’ll both have something exciting to look forward to each year, and it’s one more way you can spend time together.
11. Play a game
One of my mother-in-law’s favourite things to do is play games. She has an abundance of super fun garden games, which are ideal for springtime. Some of my top recommendations are Red King and Jenga. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of healthy competition!

I’m Layla, the home and garden editor, and I started working at MyVoucherCodes in November 2022. I have always loved to write, especially after getting my degree in English Literature and Creative Writing, and since getting my own place, I’ve gotten stuck into all things home and garden.
When I’m not writing about saving money on homely purchases, I’m either sitting with my head in a new book, painting a piece of art for my walls, or binge-watching an interior design programme on Netflix. I love to get inspiration and transform my space, usually with the help of a few Pinterest boards and a couple of tins of paint.
