6 of the best winter travel destinations you won’t want to miss
These are my favourite destinations for a winter holiday
The lively Christmas period is upon us, making it the perfect time to find cosy winter holiday destinations. Whether you're a budget traveller looking for affordable destinations, or you're searching for a little bit of escapism during the festive season, we've got you covered.
Read on to find out my top 6 must-visit Winter getaways where you can feel the joy abroad, and save your money too.
1. Prague, Czech Republic
Prague is a budget traveller's dream in winter, and prices this time of year make it one of Europe’s best winter getaways. Couples looking for a quick romantic getaway can save an eye-watering £100 on package deals to Prague via Booking.com.
Treat yourself to the plethora of sites in Prague, made even better by the winter atmosphere. From the Charles Bridge and Prague Castle to the Old Town Square, it's truly a sight to behold. Having visited Prague myself in early January, I can tell you that this city has a charming atmosphere during winter, which makes it the best time of year to visit.
2. Portugal (The Algarve)
Fancy a winter beach holiday on a budget? The Algarve region in Portugal could be the perfect place for you. It’s a winter getaway without the hassle of the summer crowds.
If you’re like me and you can’t stand waiting around in crowds, then this could be the perfect place for you to explore. With hotel prices starting from £40 per night through Expedia, and December flights ranging from £48 pp on Kayak, it's a great alternative to those busy tourist summer destinations.
I’d definitely recommend the Algarve to families this time of year. Getting around won’t be a problem either with car rental prices reaching as low as £13/day. Access to Lagos, Faro, Albufeira is made all the more easier during Winter.
3. Budapest, Hungary
If you're after a city break minus the excessive walking, Budapest is the destination for you. Depending on which site you visit, you may be able to score a three-night package holiday for 2 from as little as £136 via Lastminute.com.
Cold and cosy would be a fair description for this winter destination with sites including the Széchenyi Thermal bathhouse to relax in and a cruise along the Danube to see the city’s landmarks illuminated at night, all at a reasonable price. For anyone looking for an affordable city break experience, Budapest is simply a must-visit destination.
With its big nightlife scene, Budapest is great for solo travellers looking to have a bit of fun. You'll be happy to know that pints in Budapest average no more than £3.50.
4. Bruges, Belgium
A true gem when it comes to the ultimate Christmas-themed holiday is Bruges in Belgium. Treat yourself to sweets, waffles, and hot drinks for as little as 4 euros at their magical Christmas market. Or discover the stunning light shows with your loved ones.
Travel sites like Holiday Pirates can assist with creating a budget-friendly Christmas experience in Bruges, offering discounts of as much as £250 off in December, with larger discounts offered across the rest of winter.
I can never say no to a warm drink or chocolates in December, and Belgium has enough of both to keep you spoiled and wanting more.
5. Morroco
Morocco is the go-to destination if you're looking for somewhere that combines culture with warm weather. Those looking to save some money will benefit greatly from Love Holiday’s Winter sale, where holidaymakers can land a £100 reduction on packages.
From here, travellers can experience the vibrant cities of Marrakech and Fes. For those who prefer nature, this time of year will allow travellers to experience the snowy backdrop of the Atlas Mountains.
I have a soft spot for cold, snowy mountainous settings myself, and I can safely say that those who want to get their skis on this winter without having to spend a fortune will have the time of their lives in Morocco this time of year.
6. Krakow, Poland
For those not afraid of a truly wintery holiday, Krakow is a must-visit travel destination, especially in the winter.
Daily temperatures can drop to as low as 3 degrees Celsius, but the festive feel and quality of sites here are enough to make it well worth it. Such sites include Schindler’s Factory, the Wieliczka Salt Mine, and Auschwitz, with prices ranging from 5 to 20 euros.
Any travellers with a keen interest in modern history will love Krakow. The vibrant atmosphere at night, with the beaming Christmas lights and the minimal price of food and drink, is certainly the cherry on top.
