Beat That High Heel Pain

High Heels from Office Shoes

Not many folks pause to consider the potential harm that continually wearing a pair of heels can cause to your feet, legs and back. To stop those killer heels harming your physique, here are a few quick fix pain relief remedies.

The downward plantar flexed position that the foot adopts when squeezed into high heel shoes restricts your movement and affects your ability to lift your foot away from the ground in a natural way. To walk, you have to propel your body forwards. This movement causes the hip flexor muscles in your legs to work much harder than usual. To avoid foot pain when wearing heels, adjust your posture so that it realigns your body, adjusts your gait and relieves intense pressure on the ball of the foot and toes.

High heels push your feet into a forward slanted position that automatically shifts your body weight directly onto the balls of your feet. When this happens your weight is no longer comfortably evenly distributed across the arch of your foot. Toes are also scrunched together in an upward position that can cause your Achilles tendon to shorten. If you love to wear high heels often make sure that you take your shoes off whenever possible. Stretch and flex the muscles in your feet, calves and legs to ease discomfort and to alleviate pain.

Wearing high heels can exacerbate any existing foot problems that you may already have. One of the most common problems is the shortening and tightening of the Achilles tendon. Inflammation and pain in the ball of the foot, otherwise known as Metatarsalgia, is another regular complaint. Foot deformities like corns, bunions and hammer toes are made worse by cramming your feet into killer heels that restrict comfort and foot movement.

It’s not unusual to also experience back pain when wearing high heels for long periods of time. If you have any physical problems it is a good idea to use supportive foot care cushions, insoles and inserts to help ease discomfort. For more extreme foot pain, a plantar fasciitis arch sleeve can help to ease pressure.
