When it comes to buying a new computer, you have the choice of a desktop PC or a laptop. The latter are lighter and easier to carry around, but PC’s pack more power and typically turn in a better performance.
So what should you look for when deciding to buy a desktop computer or a portable laptop? Here is a list of five things you need to consider when deciding which way to go.
It depends what you most want from your computer, but if power is your primary consideration, you’re going to need a desktop PC. Desktops are bigger, so hold a larger power supply and are fitted with powerful hardware. If you want to use your computer for gaming or design programs, then PC’s are the way to go. That’s not to say that, you cannot play games or do design work on laptops and you can get some powerful laptops, but for the best performance, desktops really are their best option.
Laptops are lighters so can be taken anywhere thus are a convenient option if you use your own computer at work or when you go travelling. They are also convenient for carrying your computer with you from room to room at home so if you mostly use your computer for browsing the internet, laptops are the best option.
How many accessories do you normally use? How many are you going to need? Is a Blu-ray drive a necessity? How about a wireless keyboard, and what about when it comes to choosing between mice and trackpads? Well, if you’re looking to add as much as possible, then choosing a desktop will probably be the better option because of there are more USB ports available. You can fit any of these accessories to a laptop, but there are less connection sockets so you may have to remove one device to plug in another.
Laptops come with smaller screens by default – typically around 10-12” although you can get larger 15-18” screens depending on the manufacturer.
Desktops, on the other hand, can be hooked up to huge TVs or monitors so have an unlimited screen size. This can make a huge difference to gamers and designers. Laptops can still be hooked up to bigger monitors, but you need to fit the right graphics card otherwise they are not able to run those monitors to their full capacity.
If you want to make sure that your device is future proof, then you’re undoubtedly going to have to go the desktop root. Desktops allow for upgrades and additions and are also more durable. Laptops need replacing every three or four years.
The price of laptops and desktop computers varies widely depending on manufacturer, model, disk space, screen size and accessories so set yourself a budget. But be sure to take advantage of the discount vouchers we offer on selected desktops and laptops at PC World.
