A home bar is the social focal point in any home. When you’re
entertaining, your guests will enjoy hanging out by the bar and
asking for a refill.
The Bar Basics
Becoming a home mixologist
is fun and stocking up your bar
doesn’t have to be hugely expensive. If you want to serve your
drinks from something a little more elegant than the kitchen
cupboard, there are plenty of options to consider. A mini bar, retro
style cocktail cabinet or trolley make ideal options.
Choose The Booze That You Actually Enjoy
It may seem pretty obvious, but many home bar owners have a tendency to pick alcoholic beverages that will impress their guests. Spending a small fortune on drinks that you are not going to imbibe makes no sense at all. After all it is your home, so you arethe bar’s most regular customer.
The following selection will give you a well stocked bar in no time:
Gin is used as the base spirit for many popular cocktails, and is not just served with tonic water and a slice of lemon.
Vodka is great for doing shots at your Karaoke party. Because vodka doesn’t have a distinctive and overpowering taste, colour or aroma, it’s ideal for cocktails and mixing. Try different brands made from potato, grain or sugar cane.
Bourbon is the essential American whiskey, and is great for sipping.
Choose a blended and a single malt scotch.
There are two different types of rum – light and dark. Light rum is perfect for mixing, whilst dark rum is more suitable for party punches.
How you plan to serve your tequila will very much influence the type that you buy. If you are likely to be mostly mixing it, start with a cheaper brand.
Choose a variety of reds, whites
A small and select collection of a few craft beers will delight anyone who doesn’t enjoy spirits or wine.
A basic range of mixers should include a few bottles each of the following:
- Club soda
- Tonic water
- Ginger ale
- Orange, cranberry and pineapple juices
- Tomato juice
If you want to look flash, a bottle of Angostura bitters for flavouring your drinks will make you look like you seriously know your stuff.
