The Bridgewater Hall is a concert venue in the vibrant arty Manchester city centre. Costing approximately £42 million to build, holds more than 250 performances a year. The Hallé orchestra - call the venue home - the UK's oldest extant symphony orchestra, its also the foremost venue for the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. To reduce noise, a novel scheme was hatched, whereby the building rests on a bed of 280 springs. Named after the Third Duke of Bridgewater, commissioner of the namesake Bridgewater Canal that crosses Manchester, the hall, however is situated on its own arm of the Rochdale Canal.
The Bridgewater Hall plays host to more than 250 performances each year. The performances are of a varied nature; some are classical, others go for the more modern versions of music such as jazz, pop, rock and so forth. With three orchestras, namely the Halle, Manchester Camerata and BBC Philharmonic, the Bridgewater Hall is able to conduct its independent classical season annually. An unlimited number of promoters are associated with The Bridgewater Hall. Also, it is a fertile area for charity organizations. Currently, The Bridgewater Hall is functioning under the finances of a charitable trust called Manchester Concert Hall Limited. Its affairs and operations are being managed by SMG.
