In 1971, Roger Saul was inspired by a mulberry tree in his school grounds and used the £500 he was given for his birthday to found Mulberry with his mother. At first their collections consisted of jewellery and small leather accessories such as belts. Mulberry's designs reflect an elegant, effortless British cool, firmly grounded in the heritage of great design but with a casual, quirky edge that is infectious, and very commercially successful. Head designer Emma Hill joined the brand in 2007 and ushered in Mulberry's most successful era with the launching of many of their most popular bags such as the Alexa. Mulberry has always been committed to British craftsmanship and all of its handbags and purses are made at one of two factories in the Somerset, and hundreds of apprentices are trained at the Mulberry factories each year to ensure that young people have a skill that can carry them through life. Currently Mulberry is present all around the world in countries including Australia, Japan, Korea, America and France.
