More than 60 years ago, River Island came into being in the East End of London. The international fashion chain began life on a Nazi-Luftwaffe bombed site selling fruit and vegetables, then knitting wool. The owner was Bernard Lewis, who was later joined by his three brothers.
Between its founding in 1948 and 1965, under the title of Lewis Separates, the company expanded from one store, to nine and eventually 70 stores across the United Kingdom. It was at this point that they decided to rebrand to ‘Chelsea Girl’ based on the area in Chelsea at King’s Road which was known at that time as the centre for popular fashion, music and culture.
Chelsea Girl became known as a very popular brand on the UK high street as a fashion boutique chain. They were renowned for their use of brightly coloured clothing, pop music and strong fashion imagery.
In the 1970s, two of the brothers left the company. Only Bernard, David and their families were in charge now, so set up the Lewis Trust Group which also covered their property and investments. In 1982, they set launched the Concept Man stores with their range of menswear. The final step was merging Chelsea Girl with Concept Man to form River Island in 1988.
River Island is still a private company owned by the Lewis family. It now has more than 300 stores worldwide. The majority are located in the United Kingdom, but there are several stores in Ireland, Poland, Russia, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia, with stores opening in Eastern Europe and the Middle East too.
One of the company’s most successful outlets is their successful website at Riverisland.com.
The company is continually updating itself as a brand. They always offer the latest fashions and trends at affordable high street prices. The clothing is all designed in-house at its West London Headquarters, and the brand is renowned for nurturing new talent in the design industry. In 2010, they launched a Kidswear range, and in 2011 they reintroduced a capsule collection under the name Chelsea Girl. They also offer an in-store card operated by GE Capital Bank.
