eBay was founded back in 1995 by Iranian-American computer programmer Pierre Omidyar. The company was founded as a side project to bigger website being developed by Omidyar – after selling a broken lazer pointer via the site Omidyar realised the potential it had and gradually worked to turn the site into the eBay that we all know and love today. The site started out as an auction website, but as the platform has become increasingly popular with business sellers, the company has see a shift towards fixed priced listings becoming “the norm”.
Nowadays eBay is a public company traded on the NASDAQ exchange – it has localised websites in over 30 countries worldwide. There is a huge selection of products available via the eBay website, from underwear to sofa beds, from televisions to cars and boats. eBay has become one of the world’s top online shopping destinations – as the number of people using the internet increases worldwide, eBay’s popularity is set to boom.
As well as making purchases via eBay, users can sell items through the platform too. The community is underpinned by the feedback system – buyers can leave positive, neutral or negative feedback for sellers, whereas sellers can only leave positive feedback for buyers. In certain countries buyers are given the Buyer Protection assurance – if the item they purchase doesn’t arrive or isn’t as described, eBay guarantees buyers that they will receive a refund.
